Prince was speaking last Monday at Frenches House, where a swearing in ceremony was being held to welcome the 88th batch of Peace Corps workers to these shores.

The Education Minister said that he was “very happy” to address the 88th group, as there are not many Vincentians whose lives have not been impacted by Peace Corps volunteers.

“Even me, 40 years ago. We remember the names, what they taught, so that shows impact,” stressed Prince, adding, “…this batch is coming at a time when the country is experiencing a veritable revolution in education.”

Prince said that currently, the Ministry is in the process of transforming to a more modern enterprise when it comes to educating the nation and over 20 per cent of the budget is spent in all aspects of education.

“The Revolution has enhanced the nation on a whole, but a lot more needs to be done,” stressed Prince. He noted that focussing on quality teaching and leadership is important, as the country moves from the old colonial system.

He added that the Government is ensuring that teaching and literacy become integral in the country and he is hoping that the Peace Corps volunteers find the experience of being here rewarding, as they deliver the Primary English Literacy Project.

Minister Prince added that Vincentians have seen the importance of having Peace Corps in the country since 1967. “The willingness of the volunteers to work hard have combined to boost the effort of the Government through national development,” stressed Prince.(LC)
