Bursaries have been awarded to Joshua Richardson of Barrouallie, Degroy Harry of Sans Souci and Kaicy Ollivierre of Bequia.

According to a release, to date, the Basil Charles Educational Foundation has helped 136 students through their full-time scholarship programme and 78 through bursaries.

There are currently 18 students in secondary programmes and three at the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College.

In 2010, the Foundation started an early childhood programme in collaboration with the Ministries of Education and National Mobilization, which, according to the release, helps 14 pre-schools which are attended by 450 children. Four hundred and twenty cots were also purchased for these schools. The early childhood program consists of nutritional support, training of teachers and parents and minor repairs to schools.

The BCEF was founded in 1995, as Basil Charles was building his world famous Blues Festival. Proceeds from the Blues Festival, along with the sale of CDs and private and corporate donations, all help to fund the Foundation.

Many of the recipients of BCEF scholarships have gone on to live successful lives, with the first recipient, Rosbert Humphrey, now being employed with the East Caribbean Central Bank in the Currency Management Department.
