Belair Government wins Primary Schools Public Speaking
Stanislaus Gomes of the Belair Government School is the 2016 winner of the Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition, put on by the Health Promotion Unit of the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment.
The competition, which is in its 13th year, heard presentations from eight local primary schools. Gomes, along with his other colleagues, spoke on the topic, âThe Print and Electronic Media Have a Huge Influence on Violent Behaviour Among Young People.â{{more}}
The event was held on June 15 at the Methodist Church Hall. A total of eight schools participated in this yearâs competition.
Marika Baptiste from the Fancy Government School took the second position, while Isaac Cepeda from the Biabou Methodist School had to settle for the third position.
The other participants in the competition were: Tiffany Olliver from Sunshine School for Children with Special Needs â Bequia; Shamika Stephens from the Barrouallie Government School; Delianne Scotland from CW Prescod; Gregory Hull from Marriaqua Government and La Tavia Daly from Lowmanâs Leeward Anglican.
Chief health promotion officer within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment Patsy Wyllie, said the objectives of the competition are to encourage students to conduct research, heighten their awareness about issues that may affect their health, improve their communication skills and build self-confidence.
Gomes received a laptop computer and the challenge trophy. The second place received a desk top computer and a trophy, while the third place received a tablet with one monthâs data.
All the prizes were donated compliments Digicel SVG Ltd. The other participants were awarded certificates of appreciation and gifts, compliments the Ministry Health, Wellness and the Environment.
