‘Glossy Bay Marina’ aiming for end of year opening
Workers at the Glossy Bay Marina, which includes over 350 Vincentians, have been working day and night to meet the December deadline for the opening of the facility.
The project, which began in June last year, will accommodate up to 110 vessels, each of which can range from 110 metres to 10 metres in size.{{more}}
During a visit to Canouan, members of the media were given a tour of the Glossy Bay Marina, with an overview of the project being given by general manager Roberto Tudisco and project manager Christopher Waddicar.
Although the site has had several design changes, both men are confident that, with hard work, the marina will be completed by the end of the year.
The site in itself has changed rapidly over the past 10 months, working day shift and night shifts,â Waddicar said.
Additionally, he noted that other changes to provide a better quality marina have also been made.
âWe are looking at providing a better quality product, better quality pier, so we took the gambit to improve those structures now for a 25-year life span versus what we were looking at for 10-15 years originally,â he pointed out.
Waddicar noted that throughout the construction process and the operation of the marina, they intend to maintain a high level of Vincentian staff.
âNot only just for the service provisions for the boats, the vessels and the immediate services, but for the supporting goods and services that would be required from locals to be brought in to furnish these vessels when they come in.â
General manager Roberto Tudisco added that the residents of Canouan have played a very supportive role during construction.
âFor the operation to be successful, the village needs to play huge role,â he said.
He explained that during construction the company tries to adhere to the environmental laws and has tried to make a limited impact on the natural landscape.
Also he noted that they have used many natural products in the construction of the marina and intend to continue to do so when the villas are constructed.
The marina will also house 11 beachfront lots and five villas in the not too distant future.
âWe are creating a whole other town here that is self-supporting,â Waddicar concluded.(CM)
