Good year for Police Welfare Association – Bailey

Despite a late start to the year, the Police Welfare Association was able to achieve significant milestones in 2015.

Speaking at the RSVPF annual awards dinner last Saturday, chair of the Police Welfare Association Trevor Bailey spoke of the accomplishments of his organization and its members.{{more}}

He acknowledged Inspector Hawkins Nanton, who achieved first place in the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) Top Caribbean Career Move Officer Award; Corporal 776 Billy, who placed second in the Top Caribbean Community Policing Officer category, along with himself (Bailey) who placed third in the Top Crime Fighter Award category.

The association’s secretary, Sergeant 509 Brenton Smith also received praise from both Bailey and the Prime Minister for completing his Master’s degree in police leadership and management from the University of Leicester.

After almost 10 years of absence, the Police welfare Association, in conjunction with the Commissioner of Police hosted the Non-Commissioned Officer’s (NCO) Conference at the Methodist Church Hall in Kingstown on September 9 and 10, where over 200 NCO’s received valuable training in several different areas.

“We also partnered … in conducting training for over 150 members in electronic interviewing of suspects,” Bailey said, while thanking the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and his staff for their assistance in that training, which he said is a vital tool in crime fighting.

“The Welfare Association, during the year 2015, assisted its members in over $40,000 in medical aid; the association continues to meet the needs of its membership and report to its members on a timely basis,” he added.

The Association’s chair called upon the organization to look at the general health and well-being of its members.

“I remember the days, early in the morning or even late at nights, police officers were seen running on the streets of Kingstown staying fit; look at me, I’m on the obese side,” he said, with a chuckle.

Bailey congratulated all the awardees and gave them a reminder.

“Do not see tonight’s award as though you have arrived, but use it as a stepping stone for further success.”(AS)
