Building materials donated by Tank-Weld arrive in SVG

A shipment of building supplies worth $4.5 million, which was donated by Jamaican company Tank-Weld arrived in the state last Thursday.{{more}}

This contribution was made towards the relief effort for persons affected by the Christmas Eve floods in St Vincent.

Minister of Housing, Land and Informal Settlements Montgomery Daniel was on hand to receive the materials and on behalf of the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines. He expressed appreciation for the materials. The Minister noted that the donation is timely in alleviating most of the problems from the effects of the storm. He stated that local firms will also be assisting in this rebuilding effort.

Daniel noted that it will cost the government approximately $45 million to rebuild damaged houses caused by the recent floods. He stated that work should begin by Monday, January 20, and this component will be handled by the Housing and Land Development Corporation (HLDC).

Chairman of the HLDC Beresford Phillips pointed out that the arrival of the shipment of building materials is a testimony to a government that is committed to the rehabilitation process. The HLDC Chairman pointed out that the HDLC’s role is to provide construction work in the rehabilitation process, working with a list obtained from NEMO. Phillips stated that visits will be made to households affected and engineers will be deployed to assess the damage.

This shipment of building materials from Tank-Weld includes lumber, galvanize, cement, steel, doors, sheet rock, wheelbarrows, shovels, among other things.(API)
