The announcement was made on July 11 and all 10 students assumed their internship role on Monday.

The successful applicants are: Terricia Graham, Malikha Providence and Crystal Webb of St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown; Sienna Wales and Kurtisha Baptiste of Bethel High School; Terika Alexander, Rhea Cain and Brittney Lewis of the Girls’ High School, and Mikisha David and Devonti Boyea of the Emmanuel High School.

The students have embarked on a month-long internship in several businesses places, which include IKTV, the General Employees’ Cooperative Credit Union (GECCU), St Vincent and the Grenadines Broadcasting Cooperation (SVGBC), the Financial Services Authority, Baptiste and Co law firm, and host Invest SVG.

The interns are expected to give a live presentation to an invited audience at the end of their stint.

Communications Officer of Invest SVG and programme coordinator B. Tedra Kirby expressed her delight in the number of applications the agency received and the level of interest the programme managed to generate. She, however, commented that this year there was a very poor showing from teenage males, saying only 13 of the 58 applications were submitted by males, which resulted in only one of them being selected as one of the final 10. Kirby also indicated that the applications submitted by teen males were “scrappy”, untidy and poorly presented, with a couple exceptions. She linked this to the wider issue of females outperforming males academically in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

At the end of the programme, the students are expected to have a better grasp of the realities of the local work environment.
