Eustace injured ‘Shoulder dislocated after being dragged 30 feet’

Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace says he is focused on keeping his arm secured until injuries he sustained during a party march and rally on Thursday heal — in about three weeks.{{more}}

Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT yesterday, Eustace, also President of the New Democratic Party (NDP), said he has been experiencing pain, but the medication prescribed was bringing some relief.

Supporters gathered at the party’s headquarters on Murray’s Road and marched their way to the Sion Hill intersection for a rally.

But Eustace explained that he was near to a truck, which was supplying music, and he was making his way to ask the driver to proceed more quickly.

“A vendor who had tied her trolley with drinks to the back of the truck … this trolley hit my leg and pitched me forward and I fell to the ground,” Eustace said.

He further explained that his left arm got twisted around a piece of rope and he was dragged along the road for about 30 feet, until his shoulder was completely pulled from the socket, he initially told party supporters following the incident.

The opposition leader further explained that once people realised what was going on and the truck had stopped that a gentleman had come and pulled him to his feet by the same injured shoulder.

“So, I realised I really had no use of the hand when I got up … so eventually they brought in a vehicle and I was taken to the hospital.” There Eustace said he was treated and provided with the relevant medication.

He said that he is in a lot of pain, but has the medication to rely on when it becomes unbearable.

And with the national budget debates coming up next month, Eustace said he was thankful that it was his left arm and not the right, as he was in the middle of his budget presentation.

Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition said that he was treating the incident as an accident.

“I took it as a complete accident … I don’t see anything in it as deliberate,” Eustace said. (DD)
