Students receive awards from SVG Teachers Co-operative Credit Union
The SVG Teachers Co-operative Credit Union has once again made an investment in the education of the children of its members, awarding two students with scholarships and many more with book vouchers.{{more}}
A presentation ceremony was held on Monday, July 18, 2011, at Frenches House. The scholarship awardees are Ulrika Sutherland and Daniel Hamilton. Sutherland, a successful Common Entrance Examination (CEE) candidate, placed second for girls and fifth overall, while Hamilton placed tenth for boys and fifteenth overall in the Common Entrance Examination.
Sutherland and Hamilton received five-year scholarships, and would be given $1,000 in each year of their secondary school education. Sixty other students also received one-time book vouchers of cash $100 and tokens valued at $50.
Speaking during the ceremony, President of the SVG Teacherâs Cooperative Credit Union Dwight Lewis stated that the Union has maintained its commitment to education and that they are steeped in the philosophy of helping people. Lewis added that the Union, in addition to offering scholarships and vouchers to successful CEE students, also offer bursaries to persons in the second year of university. Lewis congratulated the students on their achievements and also encouraged parents and teachers to continue their hard work in helping to educate the students.
General Manager Julian Jack, also congratulating the students, declared them winners. He also added that the Union has different ways of helping its members including scholarship awards, busaries and retirement plans.
Scholarship awardee Daniel Hamilton also gave brief remarks, thanking all those who had contributed to the studentsâ education and awards, while the 2005-2010 scholarship holder Javon Carrington encouraged the students to stay focused, to put God first and to work hard at school.
Ulrick Sutherland expressed thanks on behalf of the parents and also shared some words of encouragement with the students.(OS)
