Coast Guard recruits excel
Four members of the St.Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard have secured the four top spots in a Basic Seamanship course conducted by the Barbados Coast Guard.{{more}}
The recruits who reaped success in Barbados are Able-bodied (AB) Seamen Christopher Melville, Sasha Henry, Desron Dick, and Leslie Billingy.
AB Dick placed first overall, AB Billingy second, AB Henry Third, and AB Melville Fourth. The course was held from February 28 to April 5, 2011, Barbados.
In fulfilling the aims of regional co-operation and security, it is customary that members of the Regional Security System (RSS) invite member states to training programmes organized by each other.
The course consisted of the following topics: nautical terminology, knots and slices, towing, anchoring, man over board recovery techniques, ship husbandry, boat crew responsibilities, boat handling, navigation, personal survival techniques, first aid, fire-fighting, boarding procedures, rules of the road, disaster preparedness and maritime law enforcement.
