This message came from Reverend Canon Dr. Noel F. Titus, who delivered the sermon at the Institution and Induction of Reverend Otis Nichols. Nichols was inducted as a Rector of the Parish Churches of St. Paul and St. John, at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church at Calliaqua, on Thursday, February 24.

Titus encouraged the leaders of the church to know the members of their church, their personalities, talents and strengths, just as a shepherd would know his sheep.

He stated that this allows a leader to effectively minister to the members. The members, he further stated, should use their talents in a manner that would build up the church.

Titus also appealed to the members of the church to know their leader and to encourage him as well. Describing the relationship between the leader and the members as a marriage, he explained that just as the leader should know the members, likewise the members should know the leader of the church.

Titus said that the church should know the character of their pastor, his strengths and weaknesses.

He charged the gathering to commend the leader on his strengths and encourage him to build on the areas where he is weak.

He added that the congregation should assist the pastor in his ministry and not tear him down as he goes about his holy work. This relationship between the members and the leader, if practised, encourages a spirit of mutual respect, Titus explained.

During his induction, Nichols was presented with the instruments of his ministry and was presented to the congregation as the new Rector of the church.(OS)
