Two GHS students receive support from Soroptimists

Soroptimist International St. Vincent and the Grenadines ( SISVG) continues to assist young girls in their educational pursuits.{{more}}

On Monday, October 11, 2010, two students of the Girls’ High School were presented with Gift Certificates from President Christine da Silva of SISVG. The two students are Kevenique Ellis who is now in Form 2 and Kenichia Charles in Form 4. Both students have been maintaining an average of over 80 per cent during their time at the school. The gift certificates represent $1500 each and a cheque was previously handed over to the Headmistress for disbursement to the students to ensure that they can continue their studies for the year without financial constraints.

Education is one of the six Programme Focus Areas of Soroptimist International, and the Federation of Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI), under which St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a member country, has highlighted the Focus on Education in its Programmme Action work for this year, since it is envisaged that: Educating girls can make more dramatic, positive changes than any other single intervention on the individual and on society.

Education will be one of the areas of Soroptimist International (SI) which will be highlighted at the 76th SIGBI conference to be held in Manchester, United Kingdom, during October 19 to 23. Five members from SISVG will be attending: They are Christine da Silva – President, who will be the Voting Delegate for the club, Annelle Thomas -Federation Councillor/Director , Nelcia Primus – National Programme Action Chairman, Josie-Anne Small -who is the recipient of one the four Memorial Fund Awards from SIGBI and Zeitha Hadaway – Observer. They will leave the state on Monday, October 18.
