Local author hosts Emancipation Month book exhibition

To celebrate Emancipation Month, one of St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ prominent authors is hosting a book exhibition until the end of the month.{{more}}

Dr Edgar Adams launched the exhibition last week Tuesday, August 10, at his unit at the cruise ship berth – where he is displaying almost 150 titles by mainly Vincentian authors.

The titles on display are non-fiction as well as fiction; covering subject matter that includes health, religion, politics and history.

There are also children’s titles, poetry and cookery books on show – as well as several unpublished works by local authors.

One of the titles, ‘Law and Society in the British Windward Islands’, is scheduled to be translated into Spanish. Written by Bernard Marshall, this is the first time a Vincentian title will be translated into that language.

Dr Adams, a retired optometrist, admitted that the response to the exhibition has been low so far.

“It hasn’t received the support I expected that it would,” he said.

However, he hopes that members of the public will begin to show an interest, and come out to support their local authors.

Dr Adams added that there is a dearth of written work by Vincentians, published locally and abroad, that demonstrates our range of literary talent.

The retiree said that when he attended Carifesta 10 with the Vincentian delegation, just over a year ago, the other attendees were suitably impressed that a nation our size was able to bring along over 120 titles – one of which was ‘My Homeland’ by [then] 12-year-old Storm Halbich. (JV)
