Dalrymple receives Humber bursary

Local student Ashee Dalrymple never met Doris Tallon, the lady known as the first lady of the Canada{{more}} based Humber College, but Dalrymple will always remember Tallon’s name.

The Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning in Toronto decided to honor Tallon’s memory last October by setting up a bursary fund for Caribbean students in her name. Tallon, who died at the age of 87 in July 2009, has been described by the College as the major architect of Humber’s culture and commitment to helping international students.

Dalrymple, who left the state for Humber last Tuesday, July 27, is the first local recipient of that $3000 bursary. The bursary is controlled locally by the Humber College Alumni Association.

Last Friday, July 23, President of the Humber College Alumni Association Keith Boyea, Secretary Wendy Minors, Committee Members Willis Williams and Debra Dalrymple (Ashee’s mother) handed over the cheque to Ashee at the FedEx Office located on Grenville Street in Kingstown.

Boyea, who revealed that the bursary account has been set up at the Bank of Nova Scotia, said that the Humber College Alumni Association seeks to assist students who are accepted at Humber, “as long as you are in line with progress and your records are good”. He added that the association will from this point on, “try to assist students that have been accepted wherever possible”.

Boyea also revealed that a committee has been set up “to look at the possibility of helping students that are currently at Humber and students that are looking to go to the school”.

Said Boyea of Tallon: “She was like a mother to a number of us when we were at the school; she had a lot of love for Vincentians and one thing she wanted to do was make sure that we were alright”.

Accepting the cheque, Ashee said that she was extremely grateful to the committee for the assistance. She commented: “I’m sure that this will help a lot with anything that I need in relation to school, including books”. She plans to pursue studies in Business Marketing and is also contemplating Creative Advertising lessons.

Secretary Minors said that the association is encouraging young people “who are serious about life and want to improve themselves to come and check us whenever they can as if they meet our standards or criteria we will assist them”.

Committee Member Williams described the bursary as “something we are doing just to show support and chart the course forward for local students”. He added: “We all benefitted from Humber College and we want to show that good things have come from Humber.”

Meanwhile, Ashee’s mother (Debra Dalrymple) said that that Ashee has benefitted from the bursary “and she will do the best she can at school”. St. Vincent and the Grenadines currently has over 100 persons who have attended Humber College.
