140 students enroll in Coast Guard summer programme

Students enrolled in the SVG Coast Guard summer programme have been urged to make the most of their week{{more}} there, as they are the lucky few who were accepted into the programme.

Speaking at the opening of the ceremony on Monday, July 26, 2010, at the Coast Guard base at Calliaqua, Commander Caine said that the programme is in high demand as the 140 applications forms were filled out very quickly.

“We have a list past 100 still waiting, so you are very lucky,” he said.

He added that the programme has thrived over the years and that students who pass through the programme have become successful individuals, staying away from crime, while a few returned to the Coast Guard service.

Representatives of the Sponsors of the event, Sagicor and the National Commercial Bank (NCB) also gave words of encouragement to the young students.

Andre Boyd, of Sagicor, urged them to be themselves and not to give into pressure by their friends or society, and to become something that they are not. He also told them to be persistent and dream big, not being discouraged or seeing their goals as silly.

Cheryl Rodriguez of the NCB encouraged the students to carry two words with them: discipline and perseverance, not only throughout the week’s training but throughout their lives. (OS)
