Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident which occurred on Saturday, July 10, 2010, around 5:15 pm on the Villa public road.
Police reports state that Akeelah Davis was seated on the back seat of motor vehicle P7697 driven by Norman Davis of Brighton when the rear door fell open and she fell out.
Reports reaching SEARCHLIGHT are that two other children were seated with Akeelah in the back seat. There was one adult, other than the driver, in the vehicle with the children at the time of the incident.
According to the Motor Vehicle and Traffic Act, persons driving in a vehicle with a child must ensure that the child is wearing a seatbelt or is conveyed in an appropriate child restraint system in the rear seat. A person can be charged $2,000 for a first offence and up to $5,000 for a repeat offence.
SEARCHLIGHT understands that both parents were sitting in the front seats, when the child allegedly fell out the vehicle through the back seat door.
It was also reported that after the child was rescued, the parents sought medical attention at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital from where the child has since been released.
When contacted, police at Calliaqua confirmed to SEARCHLIGHT they are aware of the matter, but no report has been lodged. Police also say that they have not been able to locate the childâs parents or the vehicle from which the child fell. (HN)
