The capture of Coke comes just short of a month after he escaped from his former stronghold of Tivoli Gardens in West Kingston when the security forces stormed the community to execute an arrest warrant on him.
Coke was travelling in a car with the Reverend Al Miller when he was held at approximately 4:00 pm at a motor vehicle spot check set up by the police who apparently had information that he would be travelling on that road yesterday.
Miller told the Jamaica Observer that he was taking Coke to the United States Embassy at Cokeâs request, as the fugitive had expressed his wish to waive his right to an extradition hearing.
Coke was transported to the Spanish Town Police Station where he was held for just over two hours before being transported by Jamaica Defence Force helicopter to an undisclosed location.
The police also expressed an interest in interviewing Miller.
âFrom our standpoint, we believe that he [Miller] needs to come in and speak with us because there are some questions that he needs to answer,â Police Commissioner Owen Ellington said.
Shortly after Cokeâs capture, jubilant Tivoli Gardens residents flocked to the streets The throng of people sang pro-Coke songs and made expletive-filled, anti- Prime Minister Bruce Golding comments as they marched through sections of the community.
The gathering of mostly women and children was happy that Coke was unharmed and expressed their undying love and support for him.
They were convinced that the police had been given orders to kill Coke to prevent him from giving evidence in United States, where he is wanted on drug- and gun-running charges.
Since the May 24 offensive, Coke had been on the lam, and the police last Friday increased a $1.2 million bounty for his capture to $5 million.
