‘Vision from God’ results in supplies for SVG students

For the fourth straight year, Vincentian Yvette Hamlet has made the trip home from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to hand out school supplies to needy students.{{more}}

The first time she travelled to St. Vincent on her mission of charity in 2007, Hamlet brought 160 knapsacks for students at a few schools; this year, 390 children from 13 schools will be the recipients of the gifts donated by Hamlet’s friends, family members and co-workers.

The registered nurse employed in the transplant unit at the University Health Network in Ontario said that she was inspired by a vision from God to make a difference in the life of children in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“You see, God has been very good to me and I just want to give back and when I see the smile of the children’s faces it means a lot to me and I know that I am blessed and they are blessed.

Hamlet stated that: ‘With the help of this country’s Ministry of Education, she received the names of students who were in need of assistance’. This information she gave to individuals who filled the knapsacks with the required items.

Hamlet indicated that some of the individuals who supported her project gave clothing for the packages that she said came from their hearts.

“The support for this is overwhelming,” Hamlet noted. “When I leave and go back, there will be people who would already have their knapsacks packed and ready for me.”

“I also have a lady travel from the United States, and my sister travelled from Canada to help with the distribution, so I have good support.”

Hamlet indicated that she will continue her mission as long as God gives her health and strength, and would like to see other Vincentians in the Diaspora doing what they could to make a difference in the lives of the young ones at home.

“…Or even down the road, I hope that these kids might remember that someone did it for them and maybe they can do it for somebody else.”
