Digicel has made sure that the gum boats will sail in Canouan this year.{{more}}
Last Friday, President of the Gum Boat Club Albert Ollivierre collected a sponsorship cheque from Digicelâs Marketing Manager Juno DeRoche.
Ollivierre said that the money would go towards the launch of the Gum Boat Club on March 28th, while some of the funds would be used to hold a fish fest and gum boat races and fiesta on Sunday, March 14, National Heroes Day, and Monday, March 15.
Thanking Digicel for being a major sponsor, Ollivierre said: âWhen you go sailing, you go sailing with Digicel. They are the best way to go, as you can carry your phone while sailing and correspond with your partners ashoreâ.
He added: âThis sponsorship will allow persons to be rewarded with trophies, cash prizes and other giveaways for their hard workâ.
Gum boats are built from what persons in Canouan call the âgum treeâ. The boats are about five feet long, and according to Ollivierre: âThe boat is like a yacht, and itâs amazing to see how they performâ.
