As part of their Fisherman’s Day Promotion, the telecommunications company handed over two Sony Ericsson W200i cellular phones to Kemrique Gloster (Junior Fisherman) and Earla Matthews (Female Fisher) at a brief presentation ceremony at the Corporate Offices on Bay Street last Friday. Gloster, who is a Form 4 Technical and Vocational student at the Campden Park Secondary School, caught 30 pounds of fish to take the top spot on Fisherman’s Day held on Monday, June 1st. On receiving his phone from Marketing Executive at Digicel Edmund Joachim, Gloster thanked Joachim and Digicel for giving him “my first phone”, while adding: “I feel good because this is the second time I have won something this month, and the phone will help me get in touch with someone if I ever get stranded at sea”. Gloster, who hails from Campden Park, has been fishing for about 4 years.

Matthews, who also comes from Campden Park, caught 27 pounds of fish to outdo the other ladies in the competition. She said that she has been with the mobile company for about five years, the same amount of time that she has been fishing. “I feel good because a cellular phone is very useful and I prefer to use a cellular rather than my home phone”, said Matthews. Marketing Executive Joachim said that the donation comes as Digicel sees the fishing community as contributing significantly to not only providing a healthy food supply but also creating jobs for persons in the various communities. Fisheries Representative Shermine Glynn Johnson, who accompanied the two fisherfolk, thanked Digicel for the donation and commented: “I hope that they continue their sponsorship”.
