Stevenson, 57, who was born in Cuba to a Vincentian father, originally from the town of Biabou, is here on a two-week visit as part of the Cuban Cricket teamâs historic tour to this country.
Greeted by the strains of the schoolâs steelband, Stevenson, speaking through an interpreter, told students that his achievements in the Boxing ring were not only for Cuba, but they were also for St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He also implored the students to work hard at their academics and for what they want to achieve in life.
Stevenson also held interactive sessions with the students, responding at times in halting English.
Following his brief talk with the students, he showed off some of his dancing skills to the accompaniment of the steel band which was rendering some Latin flavoured music.
Stevenson won three Boxing gold medals at consecutive Olympics Games: 1972 in Munich, 1976 in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow, fighting in the Heavyweight category.
He also holds two Pan American gold medals and a bronze medal and three gold medals at the World Amateur Championships. (RT)
