The event, which was organized by The New Tribal Generation, awarded four young persons, Ray Baptiste, Maxine Nero, Elvin Jackson and Nurse Erene Jacobs, for their sterling contribution to the development of the Greiggs community.
Elvin Jackson, after receiving his award, told Searchlight that he felt âhonoured and humbled at the same timeâ. He has made his mark in the community in the area of sports and drama. He said that it is imperative that people be honoured while they are still alive.
President of the group John Nero Jr said that they decided to organize the event because they felt that âGreiggs hasnât been doing anything to represent itself as an indigenous community or settlementâ.
Greiggs is a village inland from the east coast of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Many of its residents are descendants of the Garifuna people, most of whom were exiled, first to Balliceaux then to Roatan, off Honduras, in the late 18th century. (VM)
