Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, president of the Rotary Club of St. Vincent South Cecil McKie said that his club is in the process of raising funds to construct the facility which will cater for both local and regional children. This country’s two walking heroes, Earl ‘Ole’ George Daniel and Joel Butcher, will be coming on board to take on the challenge of raising funds, while walking approximately 8-10 days in Virginia, USA.

According to Daniel, he was happy to come on board, and is hoping to raise at least $1 million in Virginia, even if it means walking for more than the allotted days.

“We would break the 7-day record, make it a thing of the past, and walk long enough to raise money to build the hospital. We will walk until they say that it is ok for us to stop now” Daniel stated.

Prior to the walk in Virginia, both men will be walking in neighbouring islands starting in January of next year. Their first walk will begin in the Grenadine island of Mustique, and they would travel to Grenada, St. Lucia and Dominica, while at the same time sensitizing the public about the project.

According to McKie, the money that they raised in each country will be matched by the Rotary Club of that island, and the total amount of money made will be matched by Rotary International.

Both men are hoping to start the walk in Virginia during the Spring of next year. (SB)
