Constitution Review given more time

There is still some time yet before this country’s Constitution is revised. That is because the life of the Constitutional Review Commission has been extended to August 31, 2006.

A resolution to that effect was tabled in the House of Assembly last Tuesday.

One of the reasons cited as to why the CRC did not complete its work, was that a meeting with Cabinet had yet to be convened. May 5 is the new date set for that meeting.{{more}}

The CRC was set up on October 10, 2002 and it was anticipated that their duties would have been completed in two years. However, circumstances have led to the extension in the life of the Commission. CRC’s Chairman Parnel Campbell QC, Deputy Noel Jackson, other members and staff of the Commission were in Parliament to see the extension granted.

The resolution also authorised the Finance Minister “to continue to provide such public funds to the CRC as may be required for the effective discharge of functions.”
