Groups host volcano awareness activities

Plans to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the 1979 eruption of the La Soufriere Volcano on April 13 are well on the way.

This year the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) in collaboration with the Soufriere Monitoring Unit has scheduled a number of activities to heighten the public’s awareness of volcanoes and to commemorate the 1979 eruption of the La Soufriere Volcano.{{more}}

The volcano awareness activities for 2006 commenced with an on-the-road exhibition on Tuesday April 4th 2006 at the Sandy Bay Resource Centre. On Wednesday April 5th 2006 the on-the-road exhibition continued at the Chateaubelair Primary School. On Sunday April 9th 2006, NEMO’s Staff will visit churches in Chateaubelair and Sandy Bay; this will be followed by a Radio Call-In-Programme at 11:00 a.m. The activities to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the 1979 eruption of the La Soufriere Volcano will climax on Monday April 10th 2006 with a grand exhibition outside the Singer Building in Kingstown.

The Volcano Awareness Activities are part of NEMO’s Public Awareness and Education Program and efforts to heighten awareness of natural hazards in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
