Will Grenada miss CSM deadline?

As the region prepares for the Caribbean Single Market (CSM) by July this year, at least one OECS member state may not be a part of this single market.

According to Grenadian Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, Grenada may not be able to join the CSM on time.{{more}}

Mitchell’s comments, made while in New York for the launch of a US$500-million United Nations fund to jump-start relief operations for future disasters, were quoted in the Amsterdam News.

The Grenadian Prime Minister noted that recent hurricanes, Ivan in 2004 and Emily 2005, have marginalized Grenada.

Mitchell explained that the island’s manufacturing, hotel and agricultural sectors had been seriously hurt after the devastation by hurricane.

“For us to get in now with competition among the parties . . . would make us start on an unlevel playing field which would make it very difficult,” said Mitchell, who hinted that implementation of the Regional Development Fund would factor into Grenada’s decision.
