Taj wins Caribbean Star art competition

Eleven-year-old Taj Lee has used his artistic talents to win a trip for himself, five friends and a teacher.

Taj, a Grade 6 student of the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School, emerged national winner of the Caribbean Star Birthday Card competition held in October last year as part of that company’s 5th Anniversary celebrations. {{more}}

According to Valarie Haynes of Vincy Aviation, Caribbean Star’s local agent, Taj’s card placed first from over 20 birthday cards designed by local students.

The reserved youngster, the son of Anthony and Carmel Lee of Ottley Hall, expressed his pleasure on winning. “I am happy to win this prize because this is the first time I will be traveling on a plane and to another country,” he said.

Taj also won US$1,000 for his school. Art teacher, Claudia Windsor, said that the money will most likely be used for art supplies to help motivate other pupils. She also revealed that winning competitions of this kind is nothing new for Taj. He has won several other poster and Christmas Card competitions held by other companies and organizations.

The obviously proud teacher noted that Taj is also a gifted writer and poet,describing him as “just generally gifted, I think.”

Taj and his friends have until December 15, 2006 to take their one-day educational tour to any Caribbean Star destination.
