St. George’s Cathedral is 185

St. George’s Cathedral celebrated the 185th anniversary since the church was dedicated on Thursday, September 1. The church was built on the site of an earlier Anglican Church which was destroyed by a hurricane in 1780. The new church was dedicated on 1st September 1820, was built at a cost of 47,000 pounds sterling. Five thousand of this amount was a contribution given by the Government from the money realised from the sale of the Carib Lands.

Meanwhile, the Diocesan Council of the Anglican Diocese of the Windward Islands met here on August 23 and have set October 17 as the date for the election of a bishop for this Diocese. This is to appoint one to replace Bishop Sehon Goodridge who retired on July 31. The election will take place at 10 a.m. here in St. Vincent.
