Although Kamal Wood is quite shy, his academic achievements continue to place him in the spotlight. His face now adorns the cover of the new Cable & Wireless Directory.

Cable & Wireless Chief Executive, Daryl Jackson, told a media briefing Tuesday 17, selecting the scholar to be on the cover was in tune with the telecommunications vision to feature outstanding young people. “Over the past few years we have sought to feature young people as it identifies with our commitment to youth development in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It complements the various sponsorship activities that we have engaged in over the years, and signifies our confidence in the future.”{{more}}

He described Wood as a shining example of excellence for young people and noted that similarly Cable & Wireless was a top performer overcoming all challenges and achieving success in the telecommunication industry.

Jackson announced that the directory this year has improved government listings and an “Island Page”, which highlights key events in the country. “The directory is no longer just a source of telephone numbers, but a doorway to the many services provided by Cable & Wireless and a wealth of information for visitors and residents alike.”

Meanwhile, Chief Education Officer Susan Dougan expressed pleasure with the choice of Kamal for front page of the directory. She noted that this would encourage other young people to strive for excellence.

Dougan also said that there were other youngsters achieving in other areas besides the academics and encouraged Cable & Wireless to identify them and highlight their strengths.

But it was cover guy, Kamal who shared his overall appreciation for being selected for the directory and for receiving free internet for two years while he attends the Community College. In his shy, but very articulate way, he thanked the company, parents, teachers and friends for their support. The student, who sat 11 Ordinary Level subjects in 2004 for

the CXC examinations achieved 11 Grade 1


He is currently pursuing Psychology, Physics, Math and Computing and is maintaining an 80 per cent average. The scholar has also taken up Sociology in addition to the four subjects he is currently doing at the college.

He took the opportunity to autograph the directory for the persons in attendance at the press conference, held at the Professional Secretarial Services conference room.
