Sharon Malcolm turns hobby into a business

ONE WOMAN’S DECISION to turn a hobby into a business has many saying that she is the best in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) when it comes to drapery and soft furnishings.

Sharon Malcolm, owner of Sharon’s Drapery and Soft Furnishings, started her business over 15 years ago after being introduced to the art of drapery by a friend.

“I always like to see places put away nice; I like to work with fabric, so I just took it up as a hobby while I was working and it just grew. A lot of people noticed my work and they encouraged me and then I just started making different patterns, educated myself, learned as much as I could about this industry,” she told SEARCHLIGHT this week.

The Cane Hall resident is skilled in constructing blinds, slip covers, cushions and any style of drapes and top treatment. She also reupholsters couches, headboards and foot stools.

And after building her business for more than a decade, she was extremely proud to be voted best in drapery and soft furnishings at this year’s Interactive Media’s Best of SVG Awards.

“I was just happy that people recognized my hard work and recognized that I’m doing something out of the box, different… that somebody in the Caribbean can do this sort of work and do it at a professional level.”

She added that winning the award has helped to publicize her business and allowing more persons to know about her work.

Malcolm said that she prides herself in producing quality work and that her main focus is to ensure that clients are always satisfied.
