The daughter of Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Douglas Slater and gynaecologist Dr Sherian Slater, the 19-year-old second year medical student at the University of the West Indies, Mona, on October 2, sashayed her way to the top, beating out more than 50 Jamaican hopefuls.

The model casting for the competition was held at the Sovereign Centre, Kingston.

“It feels great. I am excited for this, because I’m getting the opportunity to do something that I have always had a passion for,” Sherina said, during an interview with SEARCHLIGHT via Facebook chat.

The beautiful Jamaican born lass says she now feels a bit pressured because she is now representing Jamaica in the competition. “I am not doing this for myself now, I am going to be representing Jamaica in November and there are a lot of people hoping for me to come out on top,” she said.

Sherina will travel to the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago on November 12, where she will compete in the regional leg.

A graduate of the St. Vincent Girls’ High School and SVG Community College, Sherina moved to St. Vincent with her Vincentian father and Jamaican mother when she was three years old.

She said she has always loved modelling and entered the competition because of the encouragement of her friends here in SVG.

“I started to change my mind about entering and they were pushing me, so I finally gave in and said that I will enter just for the fun,” she related.

With a wealth of modelling experience under her belt, the proud member of the Image Modelling Agency, who has been modelling since age 13, said she is confident that she has what it takes to go on to the finals.

“I am confident that I have what it takes to get to Shanghai; I know it would be tough, but optimism is the way to go,” she added.

Two other Vincentian nationals, Terranza Franklyn, 19, and Lina Dornieden, 12, will be representing this country in the regional round of competition. They were adjudged winners of the local leg on Thursday, September 15.

Three females from the Elite Model Look regional finals will advance to the international competition in Shanghai, China, on December 6, 2011. There, the contestants will vie for the top prize of US$325,000 worth of modelling contracts. (KW)
