School groups medal at 9th KCCU Dance Festival

Seven schools and community organizations have already picked up gold medals, as the 9th edition of the Kingstown Cooperative Credit Union Ltd (KCCU) National Dance festival got started on the weekend.{{more}}

The Ministry of Culture organized event, which is being held at the Peace Memorial Hall in Kingstown, runs over a four-week period, with three weeks of preliminary competition, and this year’s finals slated for October 2.

At last Saturday’s (September 11) launch of the festival, which saw dancers contesting the Traditional Maypole, Traditional Quadrille and Creative Folk categories, dance group Renaissance Dancers topped the medal count with four, including two gold and two silvers.

The group took gold in the Junior Traditional category with their Maypole dance, as well as in the Creative Folk category.

The seniors grabbed silvers in the Creative Folk and the Traditional Maypole categories.

The Arabesque Dance Group collected gold, silver and bronze medals in the senior division of the Creative folk category, including a solo performance by Godwin Chance.

Other gold medalists on the night included the Biabou Methodist School, the CW Prescod Primary School (2), the Fair Hall Government School, the South Rivers Methodist School and the Questelles/ Lowmans Government School.

Silver medalists were the Kingstown Preparatory School, the Sounth Rivers Methodist, Brighton Government (2), St Mary’s Roman Catholic (2), Fair Hall Government, The Junior Dance Club, and Biabou Methodist.

Bronze medal winners were the Kingstown Prep and the Park Hill Government.

The festival continues this weekend with competition in the Hip Hop and Social categories and competition in the Modern category takes place on September 25.

All gold medal winners will appear at the October 2 finals.
