Fitzroy “Brother Ebony” Joseph copped the best new calypso crown for the second consecutive year, Shernelle “Skarpyon” Williams won in the best new soca category, and Vincent “Blakey” Cuffy walked away with the Extempo crown.

Singing “Haiti, better days are coming”, Brother Ebony blasted five other competitors to grab top prize, including former new song winner and Calypso Monarch, Glenroy “Sulle” Casear, who had to settle for 3rd position with his song “Congratulations are in order”. Maxwell “Tajoe” Francis, with his song, “World Crisis” came in second.

The other competitors were: George “Jah Burke” Nedd with “Sanky nah sing so”, Ronald “Ron B” Browne sang “Ah feel it (Haiti) and Granville “Mighty Sunblaze” Findlay with his song “Duties of a monarch”.

In the Soca category, Skarpyon wooed the audience with his groovy-soca, “Ragga Muffin” which was enough to bump last year’s winner, Garret “Icon” John into second position. John sang “No behaviour”.

Decked in all white attire, Skarpyon, or the Stinger man as he is often called, had a large number of ladies gyrating not only to his song but also his dance moves on stage.

Raeon “Maddzart XO” Primus had to settle for third place with his song, “Whyne pon me”.

The other competitors were Roland “Pressure” Peters, Ashi “AC” Cabrel and Ricardo “Recka” Wilson.

Nothwithstanding the hype surrounding all the other performers on the night, Vincent “Blakey” Cuffy was the man who managed to evoke the loudest chants and applause from the crowd.

Judging on crowd’s response, Blakey battled back and forth with Roger “D’Landlord” Thompson to take Extempo crown for the second straight year.

Blakey’s steady flow on the microphone proved too much for Thompson, who also gave a good account of himself.

During the battle between both men, Blakey said that D’Lanlord “couldn’t turn me boo-boo, yuh face alone resemble ah bundle of calaloo”. This line sent the crowd wild, as they begged for more of Blakey’s lyrical prowess.

The other participants in the Extempo competition were: William “Kojah” Anthony, Lyndon “Sweet Sixteen”Samuel and Aubrey “Ras Boo” Burgin.

Guest peformances included Bomani and Luta. (KW)
