GenX fashion show a success

The GenX Fashion and Art show, which took place last Friday, July 24, brought the Peace Memorial Hall alive in a potpourri of colours, flair and talent – giving the public a taste of its youths’ creativity and imagination.{{more}}

Ten young designers presented collections that ranged from haute couture to elegantly crisp and simple to outrageously flirtatious, ‘avant garde’ designs. The designers included Sherika Sayers, Crystal Daniel, Naudica Williams, Reba Allen, Nickillia Slater-Bridgewater, Samantha Ince, Godwin Charles, Jeremy Payne, Lisa Cordice and Karen DeFreitas-Fraser.

Organised by a team mostly comprised of under-25’s, the fashion show had a deliciously youthful feel, which seemed to resonate well with the full house, mixed age audience. Sporting designs in ladies wear, men’s wear and swimwear, models strutted down the catwalk, radiating attitudes to complement their attire.

Several designers opted for a more experimental look with their collections, blending an interesting combination of materials and colours. There were several moments of amusement – the most memorable being a major wardrobe malfunction. However, the model managed to carry it off well. Kudos to her!

Show Organiser Karen DeFreitas-Fraser acknowledged that she was anxious about the show in its run-up but was highly pleased with the outcome. “As a perfectionist, I saw many hiccoughs, but despite that I have received a lot of positive feedback!” She expressed profound appreciation to the show director, backstage help, planning committee, the sponsors, the designers, models and all others who worked diligently to execute this successful production. “Everyone came with refreshing ideas and good support to foster a creative atmosphere,” she enthused.

Additionally, DeFreitas-Fraser confided: “It is evident from the outcome of GenX that there is raw talent that needs an outlet. Hopefully next year it will be a bigger venue, catering to more designers, artists and performers… and hopefully open to regional talent.” She promised an improved show next year. “We have learnt from this year’s mistakes!”

DeFreitas-Fraser was mindful to point out that GenX is not in competition with the other local fashion shows. Instead, she believes that her show will provide a platform for young talent, giving them exposure, and bringing them to the attention of other fashion show organizers – both locally and abroad. “It’s a cultural package of fashion, visual art, dance, music and much more…”

Members of the Contemporary Youth Art Movement also had an exhibition of their artwork.

Entertainment was provided by Avenue Dancers, second place Ragga Soca winner Danielle Veira, and Arabesque Dance Company. There was also a surprise, impromptu performance from Gamal ‘Skinny Fabulous’ Doyle, reigning Soca Monarch champion.
