Maddzart is new SVG king of Ragga Soca

Newly crowned Ragga Soca monarch champion Raeon ‘Maddzart’ Primus has his sights set on two more titles before the anniversary of his 10th year in carnival comes to an end.{{more}}

The soca veteran is hoping to capture the highly coveted soca monarch title tomorrow night at Victoria Park with his crowd pleaser hit ‘Mad Rum’, and looks forward to taking the road march crown as well.

Maddzart ascended to the vacant Ragga Soca throne last Friday June 26th as the official 2009 Vincy Mas calendar kicked off at Victoria Park, with his performance of ‘Is Me Friend’, beating out 14 other artistes in the process.

Portraying a boyfriend trying to convince his girlfriend that he has not and is not cheating, the former soca monarch gained the judges’ nod using few props except for a video intro, a bag of laundry and two nosy friends who tried to convince his girlfriend of his alleged promiscuity.

The artiste, who was unsuccessful in taking the New Song Competition title with the same song, said that it was a dream to win the prestigious crown, and he expects to be successful in the upcoming competitions.

He had won the ragga soca title in 2001 when the competition was first held outside of carnival.

Danielle Veira, who placed second with her rendition of ‘Ah Want Me Soca’, took the stage using props reminiscent of last year’s Soca Monarch winner, and refused to take the stage when the results were announced.

Shernell ‘Skarpyon’ Williams, dressed in red, did a dance routine with his dancers while performing ‘Soca Love’, which was enough to secure him the third position in a competition which had its high and low points.

A smaller turn out was present at this year’s competition, as compared to last year when the competition was held on the carnival calendar, and was won by Danielle ‘Dani-O’ Ollivierre.

Patrons also expressed disappointment in a number of the artistes’ performances, which they expected to be of higher quality.

Persons are expecting that the singers, most of whom will be competing in the soca monarch finals tomorrow night, will give better performances. (JJ)
