My sister’s significant other is a woman!!

Hey Rosie,

So, my sister and I are two years apart; we’ve always been close. Same schools, friends, shared our clothes, parties on and on. My sister and I went to the same college; I was one year behind her, so the pattern continued.

Ok, so we have been living in different states for the last four years and would only see one another maybe once a year. Well, to my surprise and the surprise of my family, my sister brought home her significant other and it’s a woman! Well, my parents are still in shock; my head is spinning because she never said anything for so long, it caught us all off guard.

So, now we’ve had to all sit back and digest what is going on. My mom is taking it the hardest. I love my sister and her partner seems quite nice for the few days that I met her, but how can we start to heal?

Help us!

Dear Help us,

The first thing I’m going to say to you is that love and respect will conquer all. I can feel that you come from a very close-knit family and you will work through this surprise in the long run.

Look, so your sister is at a certain stage in her life where she is living as transparently as possible. It must have had to be very hard to take this HUGE step to come out and also to introduce her partner to the family.

So, having said that, keep it respectful. Let her know that you will always be in her corner and family will always stick together. In time, the family will be more open (on both sides) to speak their own truths and feelings about what they are feeling; but in the long run they can come to a place of love and respect.

It is not for us to judge, because we aren’t God. We can voice our opinions, but always lead with love. Good luck to you all.

Rosie
