Hey Rosie!

I am unemployed and my family looks down on me

Hey Rosie,

Help me please; I am in a deep rut and it’s depressing me. I have been looking for a job with no success and I am also looking for a place, because I can’t stand living with my family anymore. I am 28, and I had to move back home after the company I was working for let go about 75 per cent of us. I truly hate being back at home after being an independent person for so long.{{more}} My family wouldn’t kick me out, but they are making me feel like crap because I can’t contribute to the household at the moment; yet they have forgotten how many times I dug them out of a fix in the past. I keep looking in my field, but nothing is there. Do you have any advice before I completely lose my mind?

On Edge

Hello On Edge,

I can only imagine what you are going through at the moment, but please do NOT give up! Sometimes in life we are thrown a curve ball, so we can be redirected to something much better.

You said you keep looking in your field? I am not sure what field that is, but perhaps you should start looking elsewhere? For example, if you were in finance, maybe you can do sales? Or if you did computers, maybe you can explore advertising? The point is you have to re-evaluate you life and see if you are being pulled in another direction.

Another thing to consider that I’ve seen work on more than one occasion is to volunteer at a non-profit organization or company. It gives you an opportunity to network with people you would not have normally met. Getting a chance to learn a new and marketable skill set and finally potentially getting you placed within the organization itself, I really do believe that this is worth considering.

Finally your family – it is what it is. It would seem that even though they are less than understanding, they are here for you in your time of need. Families are notorious for NOT having the right things to say to us when we are down, but most of the time they will have our backs. So, come up with a new game plan as to getting out of this rut. I know that this will pass and you CAN do this, so I wish you the very best moving forward.
