Vincentian Barrister cautions local media
LAWYER, CECIL ‘BLAZER’WILLIAMS has urged local media practitioners to be vigilant in their use of words by their American counterparts in reporting news “Words are meant to create certain images in people’s minds. Words send certain messages in people’s minds. They can be very negative; they can be positive. But where we have situations as is happening today, where world powers are violating international law- international human rights law- we have to look at how their news agencies put out the news,” Williams said on January, 16 2026. He was speaking at a rally in Kingstown organised by Solidarity SVG, a grouping of pro-Venezuela individuals at which the current situation was being highlighted.
“We hear that Maduro and his wife were captured. Captured! No! Captured, you know. That word is used by the US media, the Western European media, and sadly…sadly, we have simply taken that word here to virtually rebroadcast, regurgitate the news that comes out of those countries, Europe, North America,” said Williams, who is also a author, playwright, and longstanding newspaper columnist.
“We have to look very carefully and listen carefully at how people set out the news. The fundamental word that should have been used, the word that should be used when people violate international law, such as happened with Venezuela and [President Nicolas] Maduro and his wife, that is a simple kidnap. Kidnapping. This is not any kind of capture. You capture people who are criminals.”
