VINLEC CEO explains weekend power outage
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER of the St Vincent Electricity Services (VINLEC), Dr Vaughn Lewis, has advised customers not to panic in the wake of two weekend blackouts that affected mainland, St Vincent.
“We shouldn’t panic,” Dr Lewis reassured electricity consumers, when he spoke on WEFM’s Issue at Hand programme on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
The first blackout lasted from late Saturday night, into the early hours of Sunday morning.
On Sunday morning, some customers experienced another shorter power outage.
While on radio on Sunday, Dr Lewis said Saturday night’s power outage happened because VINLEC “experienced system failure.”
This system failure he explained, was the first one for the year 2025, and resulted in a blackout on mainland St Vincent.
“It took us a while to get all customers back on line.”
He further explained that while some customers were restored within an hour, “there were issues which prevented us from getting everybody back on line… until about 4:00 a.m.”
As for the cause of the system failure, Dr Lewis said its “root cause” was still under investigation.
“We have some pointers as to where the problem originated,” he said.
