Luke Browne gets the nod to contest again for ULP in East Kingstown
FOLLOWING THREE ATTEMPTS at the polls in 2010, 2015, and 2020, Luke Browne have been given a fourth opportunity by the members of the Unity Labour Party’s East Kingstown Constituency Council to wrest the seat from the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) when the next general elections are held here in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).
Browne was selected by party members on Saturday afternoon, July 26, 2025 at Frenches House, and his name will be forwarded to the ULP’s Central Executive for acceptance, then on to the National Council and subsequent Convention for ratification.
In his nomination acceptance speech, Browne told the packed hall, “I am happy the chairman pointed out that we are going to complete the 4th quarter of victory in these upcoming elections. Incidentally, I think I am in good company. If I have read the history right, our comrade political leader first achieved success at winning a seat in parliament on his fourth attempt. He went on to become the greatest Prime Minister in the history of St Vincent and the Grenadines.”
He drew to the attention of delegates that the 26th of July is a significant date in history, for that day is a holiday in Cuba… the day on which the seeds of the Cuban Revolution were planted 72 years ago, in 1953.
“This is the day on which we are, in effect, launching the campaign for what will be a revolutionary victory here in St Vincent and the Grenadines.”
Browne noted that “A lot of good things have happened for me this year. I got married… I had a son…, and we are going to win the elections.”
He spoke of the importance of persevering despite facing an uphill battle at the polls.
“If you want to learn about the importance of perseverance, all you have to do is read the story of former US President, Abraham Lincoln,” the former Minister of Health advised. “Abraham Lincoln lost four races for the US equivalent of our parliament before he was elected president, and they say that he was one of the greatest presidents in the history of the USA.
