Massy to review its operations in SVG
Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves said Massy Stores is expected to re-evaluate the way the franchise operates in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) in relation to aesthetics and product offerings.
The move comes on the heels of comments he made at a recent press conference where he said that the Massy supermarkets in SVG are not up to the standard of what you would find in places like Saint Lucia and Barbados.
“Right in St Vincent, we have the worst Massy supermarket in the Caribbean. Go to Barbados and Saint Lucia, you will see them. What you think, we aren’t good enough to have a supermarket of that quality?” he had questioned.
“I thought when they came here, they were going to lift the game. They can’t touch Randy’s and Greaves. You want to hear me talk. I got to talk. And don’t get me going on it. And I will talk in a reasonable and balanced manner. And I’m not in any way at all defaming Massy. I’m glad that they’re here,” Dr Gonsalves said.
“I get reports all the time from members of my Cabinet, from other people who call me. They say, ‘why don’t you talk about that?’ Well, you give me an opportunity now to talk about that. I got more things to say. I’m saying to the people of Trinidad and Tobago, I love you very much. I’m not putting my mouth in your internal business.”
The Prime Minister said after the July, 11, 2025 comments, he had a conversation with a former senior executive of Massy and raised the issue about the uneven quality of the Massy Supermarket SVG, compared to what obtains elsewhere.
“And he told me that he contacted the Chief Executive in Trinidad, and they said they will send someone to have a look at what the complaints are about and try and deal with it in St Vincent,” the Prime Minister said at the Cabinet press conference.
He made it clear that when problems of this nature exist, they should be solved as these are not complicated matters.
“If you’re not having enough products on the shelves, well, you get more products on the shelves.
“If you don’t have as wide-ranging commodities as indeed your competitors locally, get wide ranging commodities. What happen St Vincent worse than somewhere else? We worse than Barbados or Saint Lucia? I ain’t saying we better, but we need to have a certain minimum standard, and we have to have the best possible standards. That’s what we have to strive for,” Dr Gonsalves noted at the press conference.
