Browne remembered as a consummate professional

Bentley Browne has been described as someone who was a consummate professional in his chosen field, and one who always gave of his best in other endeavour.

Browne passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025.

He was a retired senior civil servant in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) who headed the central Planning Unit as his last posting, and later served as Director of Social and Sustainable Development at the OECS Secretariat.

He was also one of the founders of the Upstage Xperience calypso tent.

Lawyer, Stephen Huggins, a co-founder of the tent told SEARCHLIGHT that he has known Browne for about 50 years, and they met through a mutual friend, Joel Providence.

“As you can imagine after a friendship spanning such a long time we have been through thick and thin together always bonded by brotherly love and mutual respect.

“He was often misunderstood, but he had an overwhelmingly good heart and a steadfast loyalty to his family firstly, and friends,” Huggins told SEARCHLIGHT on Monday, July 14, 2025.

He noted that Browne always found a way to get things done and make a bad situation better.

“I have always been impressed by his keen intellect and his organizational skills. He was a consummate professional in his chosen field and always gave of his best in that and every other endeavour.

Huggins said that Browne, Ian Veira, Lennox Bowman, Joel Providence, Richard McLeish, and himself founded the Upstage Xperience Calypso Tent in 2005, but Browne was involved with calypso indirectly through the Carnival Development…
