Make Math fun – teachers of CPEA top performers
Grade Six teachers, whose students recorded stellar performances in Mathematics and Science at the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA), have credited their success to a mix of interactive and fun-centered approaches which they say allow students to grasp difficult concepts.
At the Sion Hill Government School (SHGS), Mathematics and Science teacher, Kamara Primus, said the use of teaching tools assisted Raffique Latchman in scoring 75/75 in Science. He narrowly missed out also achieving a perfect score in Mathematics, attaining 74/75 in the exit exam. Raffique tied with three other students for fifth place in the country.
In an interview with SEARCHLIGHT, Primus, who also teaches Mathematics lessons at the secondary level, said she has recognized the phobia that many students have towards learning Mathematics.
“As a teacher I try to make my class interactive and fun, especially when it comes to the Math. We know that there is a stigma when it comes to Math. A lot of people don’t like Math … but I try my best to make Math fun and exciting… I try to bring out a lot of critical thinking skills. It is needed in our society.”
