Science whizz beats out mom’s expectations in CPEA exams
Keisha Simon, mother of Raffique Latchman- a top performer in this year’s Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) examination- had set her sights on her bright spark landing a place in the top 20 overall.
Raffique brought home a pleasant surprise by not only securing fifth place overall in the country, but also being the only student out of the 1,682 students who sat the examination to score a perfect 100 percent in Science.
The Sion Hill Government School lad scored 70/75 in Language; 70/75 in Social studies; 74/75 for Mathematics and 75/75 in Science for an overall score of 489/500.
Speaking in an interview at the school on Monday, June 23, Raffique told SEARCHLIGHT he was not nervous until the day before the exams, admitting he felt “so relieved” after the two-day external assessment was finally over. He said while he breezed through the Science and Mathematics papers, the Language Arts and Social Studies presented some challenges.
“I said to myself it is finally over,” Raffique sighed during the interview.
