Vincentian Conservation Biologist launches kids friendly book on the environment

World Environment Day, June 5, 2025 saw the launch of a kids-friendly book written by Conservation Biologist, Lystra Culsac, who said it was a dream realised.

“It has been a long time dream of mine. I aimed to produce a book that was not only exciting and fun, but also relevant to the Vincentian context, one that Vincentians could learn from and be proud of when considering things from a global perspective,” Culzac said at the launch.

“ I am happy to have provided a few of my students with the opportunity to contribute items such as poems and activities and showcase their own artistic abilities,” she added.

The book launch took place at the Botanic Gardens on World Environment Day, observed globally soon after Earth Day on April 22, 2025, and International Biodiversity Day, which was observed on May, 22, 2025.

Between those two dates was a month-long celebration, ‘Caribbean Endemic Bird Festival’ in which Culzac, who is a an seasoned environmentalist, was involved.

The book is titled ‘Wild and Wondrous Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ and Culzac hopes it will become “a Vincy collectible”.
Culzac outlined that the book also allowed her to revitalise her artistic abilities.
“In preparing this book, I took into consideration the many thousands of children that I have met and those who I’m yet to meet and have the honour and pleasure of working with, particularly through science. The organization that I founded in 2011, it is for them that the beauty and value of nature must come to life in order for them to want to protect it now and in the future,” Culzac pointed out.
