PM Commends Public Servants for their “tremendous work” in SVG

Public servants in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) have received high commendation from Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves.

“I know the public servants and the public service come in for criticisms from time to time, we all do…but I think that it would be true to say that in all sectors of the public service of St Vincent and the Grenadines, without your work, your tremendous work, this country will not be liveable,” PM Gonsalves said at a church service on Monday, June 16, 2025.

The service marked the opening of Public Service Week which will run until June, 23, under the theme “Disaster Ready together – a Public Service Commitment to Resilience.

The Prime Minister said that too often the public takes the work of the public servants for granted, and expect to “meet a perfect human being” but life does not work like that, so we must understand that public servants are human beings and at times face challenges that might affect their performance on the job”.

He said that since the Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration came to office in 2001, from very early the 1970 Public Officers (Condition of Employment Act) was repealed.

“When I arrived, the previous governments operated it for over 30 years… and the centrepiece of that law was to criminalize speech made by public servants about public issues without the permission of your permanent secretary.
