Vincy Heat ends World Cup sojourn on a losing note
St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Vincy Heat ended their rocky 2026 Concacaf World Cup campaign with a loss to Puerto Rico, last Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the Estadio Centroamericano in Mayagüez.
Going into the Group F match knowing that pride and ending the campaign with a win were what they had to play for, Vincy Heat nevertheless went behind as early as the 11th minute, when Leondra Antonelli beat Garwin Davis in the SVG goal.
This did not deter the Vincentians who began to make forays on the Puerto Rican goal.
One such attack resulted in Steven Pierre drawing a foul in the box, that resulted in a penalty for the visitors.
But Kyle Edwards’ kick from the spot was saved by Sebastian Cutler in the 38th minute.
Soon after the resumption, Oalex Anderson struck with a well taken kick in the 47th minute to see the score level at 1-1.
Both teams then went into full throttle as they sought the go-ahead goal.
The matter was settled in the 77th minute when Steven Echevarria netted the winner as the contest ended 2-1 in Puerto Rico’s favour.
Before last Tuesday’s loss, Vincy Heat’s journey saw them losing to Suriname 1-4, and 1-3 to El Salvador during the June 2024 window.
A 6-0 downing of Anguilla on June 4, here at the Arnos Vale Playing Field, was Vincy Heat’s lone success.
Advancing from Group F are Suriname and El Salvador.
