Vincentian makes British Army History
Vincentians in the British Armed Forces continue to shine with a recent promotion of one officer being described as a barrier-breaking move.
Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Delano Charles, a native of St Vincent and the Grenadines, has become the first ever Warrant Officer in a Scottish Regiment of the British Army.
The promotion came into effect earlier this month, sixteen years after his military journey in the British Army began.
Over the years, he has distinguished himself in multiple global operations, starting with combat deployments in Afghanistan on Operation Herrick 14 in 2010, and Operation Herrick 19 in 2014. His expertise led him to further assignments, including Operation Orbital in Ukraine in 2017, and Operation Elgin in Kosovo, in 2021.
In addition to his most recent achievement, WO2 Charles also became the first Caribbean soldier to serve as an Infantry Reconnaissance Instructor at the British Army Land Warfare Centre.
WO2 Charles, a husband and father to two girls, Genesis, age 18 and Trinity, age 15, credits the unwavering support of his family for his success. He described his wife, Rodena Charles, also a Vincentian from Sandy Bay, as his steadfast supporter, always believing in his potential, even during moments of self-doubt.
He said his mother, Admareen Barrow of Richmond Hill, taught him the value of hard work, which he described as her defining trait; while his father, Norris Ollivierre of Bequia, demonstrated the importance of dedication and consistency in any field.
