Canouan’s Godahl Bay in the spotlight again
A PETITION has been started by some residents of Canouan in an effort to stop the government from allowing Glossy Bay Construction to dredge in the areas of Windward Bay, Godahl Bay, and Carenage Bay.
A government source told SEARCHLIGHT that an investor on the island has applied to the relevant authorities for permission to dredge.
The source told SEARCHLIGHT that the petition was started by concerned persons against the dredging, and the authorities will take into consideration both sides of the argument before addressing the situation.
“Several residents are against the dredging and they are working on outlining the various issues. Planning Board will make a determination,” the source said.
Meanwhile, the petition is on change. org and persons are being asked to sign it in an effort to, “stop a proposed dredging operation that investors on the island have applied for”.
Noting the issue, the petitioners said, “Our beloved Canouan, with its pristine beaches and vibrant marine life, may soon face irreversible harm due to a proposed sand dredging operation. Glossy Bay Construction plans to dredge sand along Windward Bay, Godahl Bay, and Carenage Bay. This operation threatens not only the natural beauty of Canouan but also its crucial ecosystems”.
“The reefs around our island are more than just picturesque underwater scenery, they are a critical natural barrier against storms and erosion. But more importantly, these reefs are home to a diverse range of marine life. By disrupting these delicate ecosystems, the proposed sand dredging could lead to the destruction of habitats that are essential for the survival of many species, potentially affecting the livelihoods of those who rely on fishing,” the petition outlines.
“The ecological balance of Canouan is fragile and must be treated with care and respect. The reefs, which have grown over centuries, are irreplaceable and their destruction would not only impact the environment but also the long-term economic stability of our community. Losing our natural reefs means losing these invaluable benefits.
“Let’s stand together to protect these critical natural resources. By signing this petition, you lend your voice to save the bays of Canouan. Join us in sending a clear message: our reefs are not a resource to be exploited, but treasures to be preserved for future generations.”
Commenting on the issue, activist and Canouan resident, Terry Bynoe, told SEARCHLIGHT that there was a meeting last Monday, May 19, 2021 at the Canouan Government School with about 90 people, who are mostly against the dredging.
