Insurer suspends Insurance for ‘UPTOWN’, drivers to appear in court

Following a series of traffic offences and dangerous manoeuvres, the passenger van ‘UPTOWN’ has been given a seven day notice of the cancellation of insurance from Metrocint General Insurance, the largest insurer of public transportation in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

Corporal John who is attached to the Traffic Department of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), told SEARCHLIGHT yesterday February 19, 2024 that the two most recent cases of reckless driving caught on camera involving the van, were just a few compared to what the police have on record.

“Numerous, is the best word to use,” said Corporal John as he tried to give an estimate of the number of traffic offences involving the passenger van which plies the Villa/Calliaqua/Kingstown route.

In paraphrasing the letter given by the insurance company, John said “Based on the evaluation of the recent events of reckless and dangerous manoeuvres, they are proceeding with the termination of insurance coverage.”

The traffic cop also said that the driver who was behind the wheel of the vehicle when it was involved in another incident caught on camera earlier this year, had his license suspended.

And, in the incident of Friday February 16, 2024, the owner of the vehicle was suspended from driving. He was operating the vehicle at the time of this most recent incident in which the van was caught on video appearing to be overtaking another passenger van going uphill.

Both drivers have been served with summons to appear in court.

“Mostly every week, you’ll see a video with this van…any driver who driving usually receives at least one ticket a day driving that van,” John noted.
